Westbourne Park

June 4, 2023

Rachel Hutton Design undertook this project for a young family who required additional space and a more functional layout in their existing bungalow.
We painted the original rooms in the home, laid new timber flooring and installed custom-designed joinery in the bedrooms. The family bathroom was demolished and renovated to reflect the growing needs of their children. We reworked the existing living room into a second living area for the children with plenty of natural light and storage for books, toys and games.
The back of the home was demolished and extended to include a large open-plan kitchen, walk-in pantry, living and dining room, master bedroom suite, laundry and mudroom. The new living space opens to an entertaining outdoor area and overlooks the pool and landscaped garden.

Client Testimonial

Engaging Rachel was the best thing we did when renovating our family home at Westbourne Park. This was our first time being involved in a significant renovation, and it was so great having Rachel on hand for her expert advice throughout the journey.

Rachel made the whole selection process easier. We gave her our brief of the what we wanted, and she came back to us with her recommendations within our budget, which were all on point. We wouldn’t have known where to start looking for what we wanted, so she took that stress out, as well as the time it would have taken us to research and scope.

Rachel also gave us great ideas we hadn’t thought of such as cabinetry ideas to maximise storage. We now have storage for everything so there’s no more unsightly sports equipment, toys and kitchen appliances on display!

Rachel was also a great communicator and kept us posted along the way with project updates and any supply chain issues.

We are so happy with our new functional home and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Rachel for your interiors.

Glenelg South

May 31, 2023

A project for a young couple in Glenelg South who purchased their home with the intent to renovate.
New timber flooring, painting, lighting, window treatments & built-in joinery including a new kitchen, bar, living room entertainment and shelving, built in window seat & robes throughout.
The kitchen was gutted and replaced with lacquered joinery and stone benchtops that tie into a bar area at the far end of the kitchen.
The house had an existing open shed tacked onto the rear of the home with plastic café blinds to the back yard. The existing structure was knocked down and an enclosed room with a pitched ceiling and large glazed sliding doors now links the inside to outside. This room houses a new dining area along with a huge sofa, rug & fire place.
The master bedroom has been transformed with new built in joinery including robes and a dressing table with an oversized arched mirror and wall lighting, fresh blue paint, soft window treatments, a custom made upholstered bedhead, bedside tables & lamps.
The front living room has been transformed to include an upholstered window seat in an existing bay window with built in joinery drawers for additional storage. Wall to wall joinery to house the TV with display shelving either side and cupboards below.
A guest bedroom at the back of the home has been updated with an over-sized barn sliding door that connects to a guest retreat with a new fire place, built in joinery for additional storage and French doors that overlook the new plunge pool.

Laurel Cottage

August 24, 2021

The owners of this home affectionately refer to their project as ‘Fixing Laurel Cottage’. The cottage was built in 1900 and its recent renovation has uncovered some historical treasures that we’ve showcased throughout the interior. Delicately restoring the cottages French doors and exposing stonework and timber lintels that have been covered in layers of plaster & paint have provided a genuine authenticity to the inside of this home. Now a large family residence, bustling with activity, this Aldgate property is a modern, luxury home displaying elements of the original Laurel Cottage as a nod to this wonderful home’s heritage.

Client Testimonial

We engaged Rachel Hutton Design before going to tender: our renovation was a significant project made far less stressful with Rachel’s expertise and guidance.

Rachel listened to us and ploughed through the many images we sent her to determine our aesthetic before coming up with a cohesive and sophisticated plan that truly reflects our own lifestyle and taste.

Drawing on her experience, Rachel made practical suggestions, liaised with trades to keep them on task and on time and she possesses a wealth of connections to suppliers, allowing us the opportunity to source harder to find products for a more bespoke finish. She built a great rapport with our builder and trades, making what could have been a daunting experience into a positive one.

We couldn’t be happier with the final result. Laurel Cottage is the relaxed yet elegant home we had hoped for.

The Stonehouse – Stirling

October 15, 2016

A new house built for a vibrant, young family in Stirling in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. Built using local Basket Range Stone this house sits majestically yet comfortably on its site surrounded by established gardens. The offset glass box allows a flood of natural light into the living spaces and provides a viewing platform to the magnificent outlook into and above the gardens.

Stone walls left exposed throughout the interior create a sense of warmth and texture against crisp white walls. Bold tile and grout choices enhance the contemporary aesthetic of this home, whilst built in joinery in the bedrooms, study & laundry have been successfully designed to meet both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the client.

Raw timber detailing throughout compliment the pallet of natural materials. Layering of natural weave rugs with leather, timber and stone furniture enhance the ambience along with pattern and colour in soft furnishings and art.

Unley Residence – Villa Renovation

August 12, 2016

A renovation to an existing Unley Villa in Adelaide required reconfiguring rooms to create a modern, functional layout for a young professional couple and their small children.

The original Villa has been sympathetically restored keeping the original skirtings, cornices, ceiling roses, lead lighting etc. Additions such as built-in joinery to bedrooms, Master WIR, ensuite and laundry were configured offering much needed storage to the original part of the home.

An extension at the back of the property is home to a large, light filled open plan family space including kitchen, living, dining, walk in pantry and mud room.

Crisp whites, stone bench tops and warm timber flooring has offered a neutral and flexible pallet for the clients to add their personal touch through furniture and art as their family grows.

Yorke Peninsula Residence

July 7, 2016

This young, active family were tasked with renovating a generational family property in South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula. It has resulted in a blend of sympathy for the old, working with what was there and a fresh take on how they wanted their new home to flow.

This rural property has 180 degree sea views that inspired walls to be demolished to allow for an open plan kitchen, living and dining space. A new parent’s wing was added allowing for a separation between parent’s and children’s bedrooms. Bathrooms were added and renovated along with laundry, additional storage and a multi-purpose play room.

A relaxed and sophisticated feel has been created through the finishes of satin finished timber flooring throughout, with fresh white walls and contemporary joinery. This light, bright, sun soaked home has the most amazing sense of comfort and warmth through the use of dark timber joinery, feature lighting, rugs, upholstery, an enormous fire place and contemporary art throughout.

Blackfriars Early Learning Centre

June 7, 2016

A collaboration with Architect David Romaldi to refurbish an existing original stone hall on the property at Blackfriars College to accommodate an Early Learning Centre.

The brief was to create a space that fitted with the Italian ‘Reggio Emilia’ learning philosophy. The result is an open, functional, vibrant space filled with natural light and fresh air. The flexible learning spaces and enriched play environments allow for positive interactions between the students and teachers. The flow of these spaces provide an inclusive social setting that allows for open communication and self-expression.
